Did you know that nearly one in three children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime? Let’s begin to improve their odds starting in the New Year!
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Obese children are at greater risk for Type 2 diabetes. So what can we do to help them?
Well, our recent three-year study of roughly 4,600 middle school students shows that schools can help the heaviest children to reduce their risk for Type 2 diabetes by providing
- healthy food choices
- strong physical education programs
- and classroom activities to promote healthy eating and physical activity.
At home, we can help our children by encouraging them to eat healthy and be physically active.
