For Joey, it’s just a ‘‘cold.’’ For Julie, it’s a calamity.

Joey was a healthy, full-term infant and RSV just caused mild respiratory symptoms. Julie was born several weeks before her due date, with underdeveloped lungs. Her infection caused a serious illness and a long, expensive hospitalization. Fortunately, she was not one of the 4,500 babies in the U.S. who die each year because of RSV disease.

What does this mean to you and your family? Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a common respiratory virus that infects virtually all children before age two. The virus usually causes mild "cold" symptoms but, in some infants at risk, can cause a life-threatening illness. Find up-to-date information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) about RSV outbreaks by state, region, or the entire US on the RSV Tracking System.
