In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, importer FAF Inc. is recalling 55,000 children’s metal necklaces that were sold at Walmart from November 2009 through January 2010 for $5.
The recalled jewelry is shaped as a metal crown or frog pendant on a metal link chain necklace in a crown-hinged box, and were sold with the words “The Princess and the Frog” on the packaging. The model numbers and UPC codes on the packaging are as follows:
- Crown: Model # 4616-4191, UPC # 72783367144
- Frog: Model # 4616-4190, UPC # 72783367147
Earlier this month, Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum urged parents, grandparents and caregivers to take cheap metal jewelry away from children who will swallow, suck or chew on it. Parents can throw any other cheap metal jewelry away in the regular trash.
This recall is part of CPSC’s continuous work to remove hazardous products through the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
Parents who have concerns about children swallowing these products are advised to consult with their pediatricians. For more information on cadmium and its health effects, The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry has a Q&A available online.

 This hinge could cut or amputate a fingertip when the canopy on the stroller is opened or closed. In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Graco Children’s Products is recalling 1.5 million Graco strollers.
Some styles of the Graco Passage, Alano and Spree strollers and travel systems have hinges on the stroller’s canopy that could cut and/or amputate a child’s fingertip when the canopy is opened or closed. Graco has received seven reports of children placing their fingers in the canopy hinge mechanism while the canopy was being opened or closed, resulting in five fingertip amputations and two fingertip lacerations.
Graco manufactured two different styles of hinge mechanisms for the stroller models (Click here for a full list of model numbers). Only strollers or travel systems with a plastic, jointed hinge mechanism that has indented canopy positioning notches (see photo) are included in this recall. The model number is located on the lower inside portion of the rear frame, just above the rear wheels.
The strollers were sold at AAFES, Burlington Coat Factory, Babies “R” Us, Toys “R” Us, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Navy Exchange, Sears, Target, Walmart and other retailers nationwide between October 2004 and December 2009 for between $80 and $90 for the strollers and between $150 and $200 for the travel systems.
Parents and caregivers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and should contact Graco at (800) 345-4109 or through the firm’s Web site (http://www.gracobaby.com) to receive a free protective cover repair kit.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Dorel Asia SRL, of Barbados, is announcing a voluntary recall to replace 635,000 drop side and non-drop side cribs that pose suffocation and strangulation hazards to infants and toddlers. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs until replacement kits are obtained and installed. Here’s a full list of cribs involved in the recall.
The drop-side hardware on the cribs can fail causing the drop side to detach from the crib. When the drop side detaches, it creates a space in which an infant or toddler can become entrapped and suffocate or strangle. CPSC and Dorel Asia SRL received a report of the death of a 6-month-old child from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who became entrapped and strangled in a crib after the drop-side hardware broke. The crib continued to be used after the parents tried to repair the drop side themselves. CPSC and Dorel Asia received reports of 31 total drop-side incidents, including the death of the 6 month old and 5 other children who were entrapped. Three children suffered from bruises as a result of the entrapment.
In addition, the recalled cribs can pose a serious entrapment and strangulation hazard when a slat is damaged. This can occur while the crib is in use, in storage, being put together, taken apart or reassembled; or during shipping and handling. CPSC and Dorel Asia received reports of 36 incidents of slat breakage, including seven reports of bruises and scratches to children and two reports of entrapment that resulted in no injury.
The cribs were sold at K-Mart, Sears and Wal-Mart stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700. To see whether your crib is on the recall list, look for the model number on a bottom rail of the crib. Photos of the cribs along with their model numbers are posted above.
Parents and caregivers, you should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative safe sleeping environment for your child. Contact Dorel Asia for a free replacement kit through its Web site at www.dorel-asia.com or by calling the company at (866) 762-2304 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
In addition, CPSC reminds parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Disengagements can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib, especially with duct tape, wire or rope.

En marzo del 2006 ocurrió un incidente trágico que tuvo un gran impacto sobre la Comisión para la Seguridad de los Productos de Consumo de Estados Unidos (CPSC por sus siglas en inglés). Jarnell Brown, un niño de 4 años de edad de Minneapolis, Minn., se tragó un amuleto de metal que estaba fabricado con plomo casi puro. Lamentablemente, el niño murió 4 días más tarde. Desde el 2004, nuestra agencia ha llevado a cabo más de 50 retiros del mercado que involucraron sobre 180 millones unidades de joyería de metal debido a que estas contenían una cantidad peligrosa de plomo. Desde agosto del 2009 es ilegal fabricar joyería de metal para niños que contenga más de 300 partes por millón de plomo.
Ahora escuchamos que la joyería de metal contiene cadmio. Esto es inaceptable. Justo esta semana, envié un mensaje claro a los fabricantes advirtiéndoles que no usen metales pesados, “especialmente cadmio”. Este mensaje fue incluido en un discurso pronunciado el martes (en inglés) en el APEC Toy Safety Initiative/Dialogue (Dialogo/Iniciativa de APEC para la Seguridad de los Juguetes) llevado a cabo en Hong Kong.
A raíz de estos sucesos recientes tengo un mensaje para los padres, los abuelos, y los cuidadores: No permitan que los niños pequeños reciban joyería de metal barata o que jueguen con ésta especialmente si no están siendo supervisados.
Tenemos evidencia de que el plomo contenido en la joyería de metal para niños es peligroso y de hecho fue un problema generalizado en el mercado. Para evitar la posibilidad de que los niños pequeños se expongan al plomo, al cadmio o a cualquier otro metal pesado y peligroso, quíteles esta joyería inmediatamente.
Estamos trabajando velozmente para detener que el plomo sea reemplazado con cadmio y otros metales pesados y peligrosos en los productos para niños importados de China. Además estamos investigando la joyería citada en el reciente reportaje de la Prensa Asociada (AP) y si tomamos alguna acción basada en nuestros esfuerzos se lo vamos a informar a los padres y consumidores rápidamente. Nuestra investigación está totalmente enfocada en proteger la seguridad de los niños.
Para los padres es muy difícil determinar si un artículo contiene niveles nocivos de algún metal excepto si verifican la lista de artículos retirados del mercado del sitio de Web de la CPSC. Es importante que los padres sepan que el tragar, chupar, o masticar un amuleto o un collar de metal podría causar que el niño se exponga al plomo, cadmio u otros metales pesados los cuales se sabe son tóxicos a ciertos niveles de exposición.
En la CPSC estamos trabajando para tomar medidas decisivas utilizando la Ley Federal para Sustancias Peligrosas, una ley dirigida a proteger a los niños de sustancia químicas y metales tóxicos.
Mi mensaje principal para los padres es que vamos a proteger a los niños pequeños, pero mientras continuamos nuestra labor es necesario que le quiten la joyería de metal a los niños que la puedan tragar, chupar o masticar.
