Recent Committee Meetings

Committee on Fish and Fishery Products (CCFFP) held its 32nd session in Bali, Indonesia, Oct. 1-5.

The Committee agreed to send the amendments to the Standard for Live and Raw Bivalve Molluscs (sections I-6.5, I-8.5, and I-8.6) and the Code of Practice for Fish and Fishery Products (section 7.2.2.2) to the 36th session of the Codex Commission for adoption. Committee action on other agenda items included:

  • Draft Standard for Smoked Fish, Smoke-Flavored Fish and Smoke-Dried Fish: The Committee completed work on the food additives section and agreed to advance the Draft Standard to step 8 for adoption by the Codex Commission next July. The Committee returned to step 6 the additives for which further consideration was required.
  • Draft Standard for Raw, Fresh and Quick Frozen Scallop Products: The Committee agreed to return the draft Standard to Step 6 for comments and consideration by the next session.
  • Draft Standard for Live Abalone and for Raw Fresh Chilled or Frozen Abalone for Direct Consumption or for Further Processing: The Committee agreed to advance the Draft Standard to Step 8 for adoption by the Codex Commission next July.
  • Proposed Draft Code of Practice on the Processing of Scallop Meat: The Committee agreed to return the Code of Practice to step 2/3 for redrafting by the Working Group.
  • Section I-8.6 Determination of Biotoxins in the Standard for Live and Raw Bivalve Molluscs: The Committee agreed to forward the proposed draft section to the Codex Commission for adoption at Step 5.
  • The Committee agreed to discontinue work on the Proposed Draft Performance Criteria for Screening Methods for Marine Biotoxins in the Standard for Live and Raw Bivalve Molluscs.
  • Proposed Amendment to the Standard for Quick Frozen Fish Sticks: The Committee agreed to forward the amendment to Step 5/8 for adoption by the Codex Commission. The Committee also agreed that a discussion paper on the usefulness of nitrogen factors and the need to review nitrogen factors in the Standard would be prepared for discussion at the next session by the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.
  • Proposed Draft Revision of the Procedure for the Inclusion of Additional Species in Standards for Fish and Fishery Products: The Committee agreed to forward the proposed procedural change to the Commission for adoption at Step 5/8 for inclusion in Section II of the Codex Procedural Manual—Elaboration of Codex Standards and Related Texts: Guidelines for the Inclusion of Specific Provisions in Codex Standards and Related Texts.
  • Proposed Draft Code of Practice for Fish and Fishery Products (section on sturgeon caviar): The Committee agreed to return the Proposed Draft Code to Step 2/3 for redrafting by the Working Group led by Iran.
  • Proposed Food Additive Provisions in Standards for Fish and Fishery Products: The Committee agreed to continue work on consideration of food additives in current standards and established an electronic working group (eWG) chaired by the European Union and the United States.
  • Discussion Paper on Histamine: The Committee agreed to establish an eWG chaired by Japan and the United States to prepare a discussion paper.
  • New Work: The Committee agreed to the proposal by Thailand and Vietnam, supported by the United States, to submit to the Codex Commission a project document for new work on a Draft Code of Practice for the Processing of Fish Sauce.

Electronic Working Groups (eWG)

Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CCRVDF) invites member countries and observer organizations to participate in an eWG to develop risk management recommendations for veterinary drugs for which no acceptable daily intake (ADI) and/or maximum residue limit (MRL) has been recommended by JECFA due to specific human health concerns. The eWG will be led by the European Union. Member countries and observer organizations that are interested in participating in this eWG should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) to codex@ec.europa.eu with a copy to Mr. Risto Holma (risto.holma@ec.europa.eu) by Novembr 15, 2012. Parties in the United States interested in contributing to the U.S. participation in this eWG should contact the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov) by November 9.

Committee on Contaminants in Foods (CCCF) invites member countries and observer organizations to participate in an eWG to develop a document on guideline levels for radionuclides in foods. This eWG will be led by the Netherlands and co-chaired by Japan. Codex members and observers who wish to join the eWG should contact the Codex Contact Point of its member country or its organization having observer status. The Codex Contact Point can register participation to the on-line registration system. Register is requested before October 31, 2012. Parties in the United States interested in contributing to the U.S. participation in this eWG should contact the U.S. Codex Office (USCodex@fsis.usda.gov) by October 25.

Data Call

In preparation for the 75th meeting of the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives scheduled for June 2013, WHO and FAO have issued a call for data on contaminants and additives selected for evaluation. Information on the request is at: http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/agns/pdf/
