Up one level Backcountry Tactics and Tracking Training Program (BTTTP)

Students who successfully complete this training will be able to apply land navigation and tactical tracking skills in remote backcountry settings and urban environments. These skills will aid the student in interpreting track and sign at a crime scene and documenting findings in a case report to indicate furtherance and/or involvement in a crime.  In addition these skills will also aid in search and rescue operations, locating missing persons, border security, poaching, and fugitive apprehension. The program emphasizes the ability to work as a team or individually.

Students will report directly to one of two offsite training facilities. One site is located near Capitan, NM. This site varies in terrain from open grasslands to pinion/Juniper forests ranging in elevation from 6,500 to 7,500. The second site is located near Carlsbad National Park. This area is dominated by rocky slopes, canyons, cactus, thorny shrubs, and the occasional tree. Elevation ranges from 3,500 to 4,500. Students will be given directions to the training facilities upon registration. Students stay in bunk style housing with heated shower facilities. Students need to supply their own personal items for four nights (see required list). No laundry facilities are available. Meals and utensils are provided. Boxed lunches are provided for the day long field exercises. Participants may want to bring snack foods. The climate and temperature vary depending on season. Participants should be prepared for wind, cold, and inclement weather such as rain or snow.

Instructors

The staff of the Artesia Training Division is responsible for designing, developing, coordinating, and administering basic, advanced, and specialized training programs for the United States Border Patrol, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Transportation Security Administration, federal, state and local law enforcement organizations.

Tuition and Cost

Costs for the training course include the following:

  • Meals and lodging at the offsite training facility for the five (5) days.
  • Transportation will be provided at the offsite training facility.
  • All training weapons, ammunition, and gear will be provided.
  • Contact the FLETC for current course costs.

Prerequisites for Attendance

This is a five day program involving classroom lecture presentation reinforced with an emphasis on extensive operational field exercises and an end of course practical exercise. This course is specifically designed for law enforcement officers and agents of any federal, state, or local agency with jurisdictions in remote back country settings or urban interface. Participants in the training should have some knowledge of land navigation, including compass and map reading. Attending students must be sworn law enforcement personnel and capable of carrying a load of tactical gear over varying desert or mountain terrain for distances of five to eight miles.

Recommended Personal Gear

  • Sleeping bag or bed linens with pillow
  • Towel and wash cloth
  • Personal toiletry/hygiene items for the five (5) days
  • Three pair of camouflage BDU shirts and pants (any camouflage pattern)
  • Field jacket
  • Gloves
  • Warm head gear and/or Boonie hat
  • Rain gear
  • Hydration pack system
  • Hiking boots.
  • Flash light
  • Small red light or light with red, blue, yellow or green filters
  • Mole skin
  • Electrolyte hydration

Additional Information

The Backcountry Tactics and Tracking Training Program is offering tuition free training. There are two ways an officer can qualify for RPI-funded training:                                                        

a. Work for an agency located outside of a Metropolitan Statistical Area

    OR

b. Work for an agency that serves a jurisdiction with a population of no more than 50,000

This includes Tribal Police, city, county, and State Law Enforcement officers. Call the contact numbers listed to see if your agency qualifies. The course is offered to all other Law Enforcement Agencies at a tuition cost of $550 to $600.00 which is inclusive of meals, lodging, weapons, and tactical gear with the exception of personal gear.

Requests for export of this program will be evaluated on an individual basis.
