Through its Special Education – Read/Write/Language Development research program, the Institute intends to contribute to improvement of reading and writing skills, language and vocabulary skills, and reading outcomes for students with identified disabilities and to prevent the development of learning disabilities among students at high risk for disabilities by (1) identifying curriculum and instructional practices that are potentially effective for improving reading or writing outcomes for students with identified disabilities and students at high risk for disabilities as well as mediators and moderators of the effects of these practices; (2) developing interventions for teaching reading or writing to students with identified disabilities or students at high risk for disabilities; (3) establishing the efficacy of existing interventions and approaches for teaching reading or writing to students with identified disabilities or students at high risk for disabilities; (4) providing evidence on the effectiveness of reading or writing interventions implemented at scale; and (5) developing and validating reading or writing assessments that can be used in instructional settings. Interventions appropriate for development and/or evaluation under this program are interventions intended to improve reading/pre-reading or writing/pre-writing outcomes of students with disabilities and students at high risk for disabilities. Interventions may be for students from kindergarten through adult education. The long-term outcome of this program will be an array of tools and strategies (e.g., assessments, instructional approaches) that have been documented to be effective for improving reading and writing for students with identified disabilities and students at high risk for disabilities.
