Educating, Recruiting and Retaining Health Professionals to Serve in Indian Health Care Settings

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is responsible for addressing the health needs of over 1.9 million American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) in a network of 48 hospitals, more than 230 clinics and a system of Tribal and Urban Indian programs. As part of the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the mission of the IHS is to raise the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of this diverse population to the highest level.

The IHS Division of Health Professions Support (DHPS) oversees: IHS Recruitment, DHPS Grants, IHS Loan Repayment Program, IHS Scholarship Program, and the IHS Extern Program.

DHPS GRANTS

DHPS Grant programs administered through IHS are designated partnerships between academic institutions and federal agencies for the purpose of training more AI/AN health care

Coordinating recruitment and retention of health care professionals.

DHPS GRANTS
Soliciting, awarding and administering grants for nurses, psychologists, and other health professionals.

IHS LOAN REPAYMENT PROGRAM
Offering health care professionals the opportunity to repay qualified student loan debts.

IHS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Providing financial assistance to AI/AN students with Preparatory, Pre-Graduate, and Health Professions Scholarship Programs.

IHS EXTERN PROGRAM
The IHS Extern Program provides experiential opportunities in Indian health programs to both IHS Scholarship recipients and qualified health professional students.
