New Employee Orientation Program
What to Expect During Orientation
Congratulations on your appointment to a position with the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The first few days on a new job and joining a large organization can be intimidating and challenging. There will be forms to fill out, new places to explore, new people to meet and lots of new information.

Our New Employee Orientation is designed to provide you with a smooth transition into your new position as well as provide you with a solid foundation for successful involvement, growth, and development within the Agency. Orientation is intended to extend beyond a one- or two-day event.

The following information will give an idea of what to expect during your orientation at the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Prior to Your Arrival
  • Review and complete all pre-appointment materials (if applicable).
  • Bring two forms of identification (Social Security card, drivers license, passport, etc.) on first day. One must be a photo ID.

First Day
  • Receive Oath of Office.
  • In-Processing: Complete various appointment documents so that you can receive your first paycheck.
  • Take a photo and receive your official USDA photo ID card.

Within First Three Days
  • Meet co-workers, key supervisors, and others with whom you will interact frequently.
  • Tour work area and other facilities (i.e., cafeteria, snack bars, parking, restrooms)
  • Review the organization of USDA, FSIS, and program area.
  • Discuss Agency mission.
  • Discuss work schedule, breaks, punctuality, etc.
  • Discuss duties and responsibilities, work assignment, supervisory chain, levels of decision making authority, etc.
  • Discuss pay and leave policies and procedures.
  • Discuss safety and health policies and procedures (location of safety equipment, Hazard Communication Program, emergency evacuation, reporting of injuries, etc.).
  • Discuss standards of ethical conduct, rights and privileges (Equal Employment Opportunity and Civil Rights (EEO/CR)).

Within First 30 Days
  • Discuss Performance Management and set performance standards.
  • Discuss probationary period and reporting requirements.
  • Discuss Merit Promotion Plan and receive copy of FSIS Directive 4335.1.
  • Discuss Employee Recognition and Awards Program.
  • Discuss Employee Suggestion Program and Incentive Awards.
  • Discuss Training Plan (career development, self development, on-the-job training, and formal training).
