Find by Map
- Load nationalatlas.gov in your favorite Web browser.
- Click on the yellow Map Maker button located near the left
side of the menu at the top of your browser window.
- Wait for the Map Maker to load. Click on the phrase Map
Reference on the right hand side of the Map Maker in
the list of map layers.
- Now click the checkbox next to Index to Topographic Maps
- 1:24,000 and Other Large Scales.
- Just above the map canvas, select Delaware from the pulldown
menu labeled Zoom to State(s) and release. A map covering
all of Delaware will appear. (This example uses Delaware, but
you can use the Zoom tools to locate your area of interest.)
- Click the Identify button above the map canvas and
then click anywhere on the map. The name of the "identified"
topographic map will appear in a pop-up window. Click on its
name to display the map. Please make certain that your browser is set to allow
pop-up windows.
Find by Name
- Load nationalatlas.gov in your favorite Web browser.
- Click on the yellow Map Maker button located near the left
side of the menu at the top of your browser window.
- Click the Find tab on the right side of the Map Maker
above the list of map layers. An input form appears in this
tab.
- Enter the name of the place you're interested in. For example,
enter Phillips Lake in the Feature Name input box then
click the Find It! button.
- A table will appear in this tab that lists every feature
in the United States that includes Phillips Lake in its name.
Click on any of these names. Information about the selected
feature will appear.
- Click the Show Topographic Map button to display a
topo map of this feature. Please
make certain that your browser is set to allow pop-up windows.
Note:
- Once you've seen how the map index works, you'll probably
want to turn on other National Atlas map layers (like roads,
streams, cities and towns) to help you search by map.

aerial photo of this feature. Please make certain that your browser
is set to allow pop-up windows.
