This map shows the physical materials at the surface of the United States. Its design distinguishes between nineteen types of land cover including developed lands, wetlands, forests, farmed lands, and barren regions. Several classes of land cover found only in Alaska are shown. A sample area in Oregon is enlarged in an inset with explanations meant to enhance the understanding of land cover data. The data used to illustrate land cover comes from a mosaic of many individual images recorded by the Landsat satellite. Landsat data is particularly suited to the analysis of land cover patterns at regional and national levels. Each legend entry has a photograph and a small thumbnail map that locates each land cover type on the larger map. All States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico are mapped at the same scale.

This fascinating map illustrates the geology of the United States. It shows the distribution and character of rocks at or near the land surface. The map illustrates the ages of sedimentary, volcanic, plutonic, and metamorphic rocks throughout the Nation and the bedrock immediately beneath soils or thin surficial deposits. Major faults, impact structures, large volcanic calderas, and many other significant and interesting geologic features are also shown on this map. It was compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). A more complete description of the map and the geologic features it portrays is available as USGS Circular 1300, About the Geologic Map in the National Atlas of the United States of America.

An innovative map that emphasizes and labels America's physical features is now available. The surface of our Nation is marked by a tremendous variety of natural features, such as mountains, valleys, hills, plains, and plateaus. These physical features are illustrated on this map in striking shaded relief. State boundaries are included for reference and orientation. Small inset maps use color tints to denote elevation ranges, providing a visual summary of the rise in the land surface from below sea level in California up to 20,320 feet in Alaska.

This new National Atlas map replaces the 1968 National Atlas Federal Lands map. The map shows the lands of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Department of Defense, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, the National Park Service, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Agricultural Research Service, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Transportation, in the United States and Puerto Rico. Updates were compiled from National Atlas 1:2,000,000-scale digital data and other sources. Because of scale constraints, land units smaller than the size of a Public Land Survey System township (about 23,000 acres) generally are omitted.

This attractive map of Forest Cover Types was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. Using satellite images the Forest Service identified the extent of nearly two dozen major forest cover types. This forest information was overlaid on a shaded relief map of the United States. Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are shown on inset maps, and at the same scale as the rest of the United States.

A new Hydrologic Units map has been published as part of The National Atlas of the United States of America®. This map depicts a hydrologic system that divides and subdivides the United States into successively smaller river basin units. These subdivisions, or hydrologic units, are used for collection and organization of hydrologic data. The hydrologic units outlined on this map represent natural and manmade stream-drainage areas. The boundaries and associated hydrologic unit codes were modified from the State Hydrologic Unit Maps, published at 1:500,000-scale and prepared by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Water Resources Council. Descriptions, names, and drainage areas of hydrologic units were published in the USGS Water Supply Paper 2294, Hydrologic Unit Maps.

This Hydrologic Units Atlas map supersedes both the Hydrologic Unit Map of the United States, East (GHU0057-1T) and the Hydrologic Unit Map of the United States, West (GHU0057-2T).

Nationalatlas.gov™ is pleased to offer a map showing the National Wilderness Preservation System for the United States of America. The Wilderness Act established the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1964, affording the highest degree of protection to some of the remaining wild public lands in the United States. The map shows all designated Wilderness areas, and the color of each area depicts which of the four Federal agencies administers the Wilderness. In addition to the map, insets on the front side show wilderness photos, a summary of the wilderness legacy, and quotes from citizens about what wilderness means to them. The back side of the map provides general information about the wilderness system in text, images, and sketches. In addition, a table lists acreage, year of establishment, and administrative information for each Wilderness.

Nationalatlas.gov™ and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are pleased to offer a map showing the National Wildlife Refuge System for the United States of America. The system is a network of habitats that benefit wildlife, provide unparalleled outdoor experiences for all Americans, and protect a healthy environment. It contains more than 540 wildlife refuges that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and its partners restore, protect, and manage. There is at least one wildlife refuge in each of the 50 States. They offer the public opportunities for wildlife watching and photography, hunting and fishing, and education and interpretation.

The new Presidential Elections map details election results from 1789 to 2008. This map was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as part of the National Atlas of the United States®. The map shows the electoral votes won, by political party and State, for the fifty-four Presidential elections from George Washington in 1789 to Barack Obama in 2008.

In addition to a small electoral votes map, the 2008 election is illustrated with a larger, more detailed map that shows the popular vote results at the county level.

This National Atlas map illustrates the evolution of America's political parties and its election laws and procedures. It can spark further reading and lead to discovery of the interesting stories behind the elections. Get your own copy and order another for your local school!

This National Atlas map shows the distribution of the principal aquifers that supply ground water to the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The aquifer shown in each geographic area is generally the uppermost principal aquifer for the area. Each principal aquifer is classified as one of six types of permeable geologic material: unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel, semi consolidated sand, sandstone, carbonate rocks, interbedded sandstone and carbonate rocks, and basalt and other types of volcanic rock. Also shown is the general distribution of glacial deposits that contain numerous productive aquifers in the north-central and northeastern parts of the conterminous United States. Major alluvial aquifers along main watercourses are not shown.

A beautiful Shaded Relief map of North America has been published as part of the National Atlas of the United States. Digital elevation data and computer software were used to render this stunning portrait of America's terrain. 23 distinct colors depict broad elevation ranges.

The terrain is "illuminated" from the northwest with a simulated sun angle of 45 degrees.  Within each color, the lightest color values represent fully illuminated steep slopes and the darkest values represent steep areas in shadow.  This is a particularly effective method for portraying relief since this "hill shading" technique produces an easily interpreted image of the landscape and a good impression of general elevation.
