Study Overview

Viral infections play a significant role in triggering life-threatening acute hyperammonemic crises in patients with urea cycle disorders (UCD). The standard of care for UCD patients is routine vaccination for seasonal and H1N1 influenza viruses. However, nutritional deficiencies and their underlying causes may affect the efficacy of vaccination. At the present time, the medical community does not completely appreciate the dietary complications that may occur in patients with UCD and the impact of those dietary complications on the function of the immune system.

We hope to recruit interested UCD patients to study (1) their nutritional and immunologic status and (2) whether or not they are able to develop immunity to the seasonal and H1N1 influenza viruses following a vaccine that will be given in accordance with standard of care for this patient population.
