How have caseloads in state courts changed over time? The Bureau of Justice Statistics' (BJS) State Court Organization, 1987-2004 dataset—compiled from State Court Organization, 1987, 1993, 1998, and 2004—shows increased case filings across all jurisdictional levels of state courts, including limited and general jurisdiction trial courts and appellate courts. Case filings increased by 45% in limited jurisdiction courts, 43% in general jurisdiction courts, and 32% in appellate courts from 1987 to 2004. The largest increase in filings for general jurisdiction courts was in criminal cases (67%). For limited jurisdiction courts, the largest increase in filings was in domestic relations cases (92%).
