Safe Medication Use

Millions of people benefit from FDA-approved medicines. However, when medicines are not used correctly, they can cause serious injuries or even death. There are simple steps you can take to safely use your prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Watch the video and follow these safety tips to protect yourself and your family. 

  
 

  • Keep a Record - Make a list of the medicines you take including vitamins. Keep a copy of the list with you all the time.

  • Read the Label - Read the warnings and other information on the drug label or insert.

  • Ask Questions - Talk to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about your medicines. Ask about side effects.

  • Avoid Problems - Use your medicines as directed. Do not share your prescriptions with others.

 

 

In 1999, the FDA Office of Women's Health established the "Use Medicines Wisely" initiative to educate women about safe medication use. The initiative includes outreach activities in communities across the country. Here's how you can participate.
