Definition of Transformative Research

Cover image: NSB reportIn its 2007 report, "Enhancing Support of Transformative Research at the National Science Foundation", the National Science Board presents its findings and recommendations for NSF to enhance its ability to identify and fund transformative research. Based on this report, NSF has adopted the following working definition:

Transformative research involves ideas, discoveries, or tools that radically change our understanding of an important existing scientific or engineering concept or educational practice or leads to the creation of a new paradigm or field of science, engineering, or education. Such research challenges current understanding or provides pathways to new frontiers.
