The Road Ahead for Puerto Rico

Today, I've been fortunate to get an education in Puerto Rico's P-12 system. And from the frank discussions at the Summit, to the students and great teachers whom I talked with at the Ines Maria Mendoza Elementary School in Bayamon, one conclusion leaps out. Puerto Rico today is at an educational crossroads.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan Recognizes 305 Schools as 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools

The U.S. Department of Education today named 305 schools as 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools based on their overall academic excellence or for their success in closing achievement gaps. The Department will honor the entire 256 public and 49 private schools with their National Blue Ribbon School awards at a conference and awards ceremony Nov. 14-15 in Washington, D.C.

U.S. Department of Education Announces 'Education and the Economy' Back-to-School Bus Tour with Stops Around the Great Lakes

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and senior Department officials will visit states throughout the Midwest for “Education and the Economy,” the Department's second annual back-to-school bus tour from Sept.7 to Sept. 9. The tour will kick off in Pennsylvania before heading to states around the Great Lakes, including Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Illinois.

The U.S. Department of Education Launches Version 2.0 of Education Data Web Site

The U.S. Department of Education today launched version 2.0 of ED Data Express, an interactive Web site aimed at making accurate and timely K-12 education data available to the public. The upgraded site adds new data visualization tools, enhanced documentation, and social networking options for users.

Today the Obama Administration released the final application for the Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge (RTT-ELC), which will provide $500 million in State-level competitive grants to improve early learning and development programs.

Puerto Rico to Receive $153.6 Million to Turn Around Its Persistently Lowest-Achieving Schools

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that Puerto Rico will receive $153.6 million to turn around its persistently lowest achieving schools through the Education Department's School Improvement Grants (SIG). The funds are part of $546 million available to states and D.C. under the program. In fiscal year 2009, states received a total of $3.5 billion in SIG support.

Obama Administration Proceeds with Reform of No Child Left Behind Following Congressional Inaction

With the new school year fast approaching and still no bill to reform the federal education law known as No Child Left Behind, the Obama administration will provide a process for states to seek relief from key provisions of the law, provided that they are willing to embrace education reform.

Many rural schools begin welcoming students back for the new academic year this month and the U.S. Department of Education today announced that it will hold events and engage in outreach efforts throughout August to help promote the strengths, opportunities, and challenges in rural education.
