Each year, more than 12,000 babies are born with hearing loss. Hearing loss isn’t easily recognized and if left unidentified, can lead to delays in social skills and speech and language development. Every state now has a program to identify infants with hearing loss and over 95 percent are screened. However, the CDC found that of those who didn’t pass, about 28,000 aren’t receiving the recommended follow up.
Early detection enables children to receive services that will help them develop communication and social skills. Make sure your newborn’s hearing has been evaluated and follow up as appropriate.
