Description

The American College of Surgeons (ACS), founded in 1913, promotes high standards for surgeons and works for excellence in the quality of surgical care. ACS activities and services include continuing education, programs for improving cancer and trauma care, sponsorship of graduate education in surgery, films, publications, symposia and meetings, scholarships, and public information services. ACS also maintains a film library of about 1,500 titles.

ACS publishes consumer information pamphlets, manuals on surgical care, a self-administered surgical education program, reports, guidelines, article reprints, proceedings, and periodicals. Consumer pamphlets deal with the topics of selecting a surgeon, second opinions, informed consent, and operation costs, as well as brochures about frequently performed operations. A publications catalog is available. Serial publications: Bulletin, monthly--news on ACS activities and contents of major speeches; The Journal of the American College of Surgeons (journal), monthly--articles on issues and developments in surgery.
