NASA’s integrated technology roadmap, which includes both “pull" and "push" technology strategies, considers a wide range of pathways to advance the nation's current capabilities in space. In 2011, NASA developed the set of 14 draft Space Technology Area Roadmaps for review by the National Research Council (NRC) as an initial point of prioritization for mapping NASA's future investments in technology.

Through an open process of community engagement, the NRC gathered input, integrated, and prioritized each Space Technology Area Roadmap, providing NASA with strategic guidance and recommendations that inform the technology investment decisions of the agency’s space technology activities. On February 1, 2012, the NRC released its final report on “NASA Space Technology Roadmaps and Priorities” which outlined 16 top-priority technologies necessary for NASA’s future missions and growing the nation’s new technology economy.

The technology priorities the report identifies are aligned with NASA missions to extend and sustain human activities beyond low Earth orbit, explore the evolution of the solar system and the potential for life elsewhere, and expand our understanding of Earth and the universe in which we live.

During the coming months, NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist will lead an agency-wide analysis and coordination effort to update the 14 technology area roadmaps with the NRC report's findings and recommendations.
