On Tuesday, December 15, 2009, Dr. Collins delivered remarks introducing Julio Frenk, M.D., Ph.D., presenter of the 2009 David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture. Dr. Frenk, dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, discussed "Globalization and Health: The Role of Knowledge in an Interdependent World." Dr. Collins has singled out global health as one of the five areas he wants to focus on during his tenure. Marshall Nirenberg, M.D. is remembered as a noted geneticist and the first NIH scientist to win the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1968. Dr. Nirenberg shared the experience of his efforts with NIH co-workers to decipher the genetic code during the "Genes to Proteins: Decoding Genetic Information" Symposium on November 12, 2009 on the NIH campus. He was celebrated that day as his research was designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the American Chemical Society, November 12, 2009.

On Thursday, October 28, 2009, at the first ever Mobile Technologies as a Platform for Health Research and Healthcare Delivery Health (mHealth) Summit at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Dr. Collins gave a keynote address. The mission of the mHealth Summit is to explore the use of mobile technologies (cell phones, PDAs, etc.) to improve public health. Dr. Collins’ presentation followed a keynote by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and highlighted NIH research opportunities that have the potential to enhance applications of MHealth technologies in the future.
