What We Do

The Indian Health Service is a federal agency that provides health care to Native Americans and Alaska Natives.

Employment Systems

At IHS operated facilities we are federal government employees and can choose either Civil Service Exit Disclaimer – You Are Leaving www.ihs.gov or Commissioned Corps Exit Disclaimer – You Are Leaving www.ihs.gov employment systems.

At tribally operated facilities we are hired as tribal employees. Visit the Service Units.

Who Has Preference

Preference in hiring is given to qualified Indian candidates according to the Indian Preference Act (Title 25, US Code, Section 472 NS 473). If there are no qualified Indian applicants, non-Indians will be considered according to EEO regulations.

Physicians, Nurses, Public Health Nurses, Physician Assistants Dentists, Social Workers, Mental Health Staff, Environmental Health Staff, Medical Technologists, Radiologic Technologists, Pharmacists, Health Educators, Dietetic Services, and Public Health Nutritionists
