The Department of Cultural Affairs in Los Angeles, California, generates and supports high quality arts and cultural experiences for residents and visitors through its grantmaking and arts programming activities. The department has partnered with artists and organizations throughout Los Angeles.

With its MICD25 grant, the department is planning to develop the Broadway Arts Center, a mixed-use center offering affordable artists' housing, performance/exhibition space, an educational facility, and a creative commercial center located in the historic Broadway Theater District of downtown LA. The site currently comprises underutilized commercial properties. The department will develop planning studies, in collaboration with partners including Artspace/Actors Fund and the Community Redevelopment Agency of Los Angeles, that will include public meetings with all stakeholders in the project. A minimum of 100 units of affordable housing will be available for artists, putting them in close proximity to employment opportunities and transit. CalArts expects to serve an estimated 200 students a year with the new educational facility. Altogether the project expects to serve 5,000 artists.
