Knight/NEA Community Arts Journalism Challenge

Together with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the NEA co-managed an eight-city competition seeking new models for local arts journalism in the digital age. The Knight/NEA Community Arts Journalism Challenge sought to rethink how traditional media systems function, harnessing the latest tools and technology to make the transition to the new information environment.

During a webcast on October 10, 2011, Knight and NEA announced the five finalists for the Challenge. The finalists received $20,000 to draft an Idea to Action plan to develop the structures and processes necessary to implement their idea. Of those five finalists, three were selected and announced as winners of the Challenge on April 19, 2012. Each winner received $80,000 to launch their idea. In addition, the NEA announced its continuing support for arts journalism projects through the Local Arts Agencies portfolio of the Art Works funding category.

As part of this initiative, the NEA produced a series of guest posts on its blog that explore different elements of the conversation.
