Chairman Rocco Landesman Releases the Schedule for His Visits to South Bend, Gary, and Munster, Indiana, and Chicago, Illinois, July 17–18, 2012

Washington, DC—NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman will visit South Bend, Gary, and Munster, Indiana, on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, as part of his Art Works tour. In each city, Landesman will meet with arts organizations and arts and civic leaders to learn about their efforts to use the arts to create vibrant, livable communities. In addition, on Wednesday, July 18, Landesman will participate in a panel discussion in Chicago, Illinois, to talk about his work in building partnerships with other federal agencies as the Chairman of the NEA.

Landesman's trip to Indiana on Tuesday, July 17 marks his first visit to this state as Chairman of the NEA. Hosted by the Indiana Arts Commission, one of the NEA's state partners, the visit will begin in South Bend, where Landesman will meet with local NEA grantee organizations. He will then visit the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture, an arts redevelopment project in downtown South Bend. Landesman will then travel to Gary, where he will visit South Shore Dance Alliance and the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts to learn more about the arts centered redevelopment of the Miller Beach Arts & Creative District. Landesman will conclude his visit by participating in a panel discussion about creative placemaking in Indiana at South Shore Arts in Munster. The discussion will include Eric Koch, state representative from Bedford, Indiana; Brenda Myers, director of the Hamilton County Convention and Visitors Bureau; and Joanna Taft, founder of the Harrison Center for the Arts in Indianapolis.

Hosted by Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, Arts Alliance Illinois, and the Illinois Arts Council, the event on Wednesday, July 18 will feature Michelle T. Boone, Commissioner of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, who will present an overview of the Chicago Cultural Plan 2012 as well as moderate a panel discussion about the intersections for art and public agencies. In addition to Rocco Landesman, the panel will also include City of Chicago leaders Gabe Klein, commissioner with the Chicago Department of Transportation; Joe Iacobucci, manager of strategic planning and policy for the Chicago Transit Authority; and Beth Swanson, deputy chief of staff for education, office of the mayor.
