In 1790, the United States conducted its first decennial census, as required by the Constitution. It took 18 months for an estimated 650 federal marshals to visit every household in the original 13 States and associated districts and territories. The results of that first count showed that just under 4 million people lived in the United States.
220 years later, the 2010 Census staff face the daunting task of finding and reaching those living in every residence from Hawaii to Maine - a projected 310 million people.
