In 2008, the leading industries in the United States were educational services, health care, social assistance and retail businesses. Among the most common means of earning a living were management and professional occupations, sales and office occupations, service occupations and production, transportation and material occupations. Seventy-nine percent of the people employed were private wage and salary workers. The Census Bureau hired more than a million employees to help conduct the 2010 Census. These positions were created in support of the massive outreach effort needed to educate every resident of the United States about the importance of the census as well as to ensure that everyone was counted once, only once, and in the right place.
