Ysleta del Sur Service Unit

The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo is the "youngest" Pueblo, having been in existance in the El Paso, Texas area since 1680. However, the tribe was not federally recognized until August 19, 1987. The establishment of the Ysleta del Sur Service Unit was approved June 7, 1989 in response to the wishes of the Ysleta del Sur Tribe.

There is no IHS direct care medical facility at Ysleta del Sur at this time. Most professional health providers are available to the tribe via the IHS contract health services program. The tribe has completed the renovation of a portion of their community complex to include space for some preventive health programs (Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Social Services), plus small dental and optometry facilities. The tribal health administrator, contract health services program, and community health representative program are also housed in the remodeled area. The tribe continues to work on a health needs assessment in anticipation of the need for, and to plan for, new health services. Tribal members also have the option of obtaining health care at other private facilities within the surrounding areas.
