Regional Training Initiative (RTI)

Regional training is the development of training programs and resources for state and local agencies. Through a project called the Regional Training Initiative (RTI), the National Institute of Corrections provides funding and enlists volunteers to give regional training throughout the country. These volunteers are called Regional Field Coordinators (RFCs), and the areas they serve comprise the central, southern, northeastern, and western regions of the United States.
Central Region States: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin; Northeast Region States: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia; Sourthern Region States: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Lousiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virgin Islands; Western Region States: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Mariana Islands, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington

Regional Training Is Important...

...to correctional agencies because:
  • Your voice and training concerns are represented at a national level.
  • You gain visibility as an agency dedicated to staff development and as a provider of national caliber training.
  • You receive reciprocal support from other regional agencies and training efforts.
  • You receive funding assistance to meet training requirements and goals.
  • Your efforts have a greater impact when coupled with NIC support.
...to participating correctional trainers (Regional Field Coordinators/RFCs) because:
  • You will foster your professional development.
  • You will gain a broader perspective on correctional issues, responses, and training strategies.
  • You have an opportunity to work with other bright and motivated colleagues from all over the country.
...to citizens/taxpayers because:
  • Your federal tax dollars are being spent on improving and developing resources in your local community.
  • Training programs and resources developed for your region are re-used nationally to maximize taxpayer benefits.

The success of the Regional Training Initiative is made possible by the efforts and funding support of the volunteer agencies and other participating groups.
