Explanation: This graph displays the distribution of insulin and oral medication treatment among U.S. adults aged 20 years or older with diagnosed diabetes in 2004–2006. Fourteen percent were treated with insulin only, 13% received insulin and oral medication, 57% received oral medication only, and 16% received neither oral medication nor insulin.

Explanation: This graph shows the estimated percentage of U.S. adults aged 20 years or older who had diabetes in the year 2007 by age group. The estimated percentage of adults with diabetes was 2.6% among those aged 20–39 years, 10.8% among those aged 40–59 years, and 23.1% among those aged 60 years or older.

Explanation: This graph displays the estimated number of new cases of diagnosed diabetes among U.S. adults aged 20 years or older by age group. In the year 2007, of the estimated 1.6 million new cases of diagnosed diabetes in people aged 20 years or older, about 281,000 were aged 20–39 years, about 819,000 were aged 40–59 years, and about 536,000 were aged 60 years or older.

Explanation:

This graph compares the incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes among children and adolescents younger than 20 years by age group and race/ethnicity. In the year 2002–2003, among children younger than 10 years, the estimated rate of new cases of type 1 diabetes was 18.3 per 100,000 per year, and the estimated rate of new cases of type 2 diabetes was 0.4 per 100,000 per year. Among children younger than 10 years with type 1 diabetes, the estimated rate of new cases was 23.4 per 100,000 per year among non-Hispanic whites; 13.0 per 100,000 per year among African-Americans; 12.4 per 100,000 per year among Hispanics; 7.1 per 100,000 per year among Asians/Pacific Islanders; and 4.9 per 100,000 per year among American Indians. Among children younger than 10 years with type 2 diabetes, the estimated rate of new cases was 0.1 per 100,000 per year for non-Hispanic whites; 0.8 per 100,000 per year for African-Americans; 0.6 per 100,000 per year for Hispanics; 1.1 per 100,000 per year for Asians/Pacific Islanders; and 0.0 per 100,000 per year for American Indians.

In the year 2002–2003, among children and adolescents aged 10–19 years, the estimated rate of new cases of type 1 diabetes was 19.7 per 100,000 per year, and the estimated rate of new cases of type 2 diabetes was 9.9 per 100,000 per year. Among children and adolescents aged 10–19 years with type 1 diabetes, the estimated rate of new cases was 24.1 per 100,000 per year among non-Hispanic whites; 15.3 per 100,000 per year among African-Americans; 15.1 per 100,000 per year among Hispanics; 7.6 per 100,000 per year among Asians/Pacific Islanders; and 6.0 per 100,000 per year among American Indians. Among children and adolescents aged 10–19 years with type 2 diabetes, the estimated rate of new cases was 4.3 per 100,000 per year for non-Hispanic whites; 20.9 per 100,000 per year for African-Americans; 12.7 per 100,000 per year for Hispanics; 17.1 per 100,000 per year for Asians/Pacific Islanders; and 36.7 per 100,000 per year for American Indians.

Graph Title: Estimated lifetime risk of developing diabetes for individuals born in the United States in 2000

One of three (33%) men and nearly 2 of 5 (39%) women born in the United States in 2000 will develop diabetes sometime during their lifetime. For men born in 2000, estimated lifetime risks of developing diabetes were 27% among non-Hispanic whites, 40% among non-Hispanic blacks, and 45% among Hispanics. For women born in 2000, estimated lifetime risks were 31% among non-Hispanic whites, 49% among non-Hispanic blacks, and 53% among Hispanics.
