AAFP Spearheads Movement to Thwart Proposed Elimination of Payment Provision

The AAFP is taking a leading role in opposing a House measure that would pay for a year-long extension of the Medicare physician payment rate by eliminating a provision in the health care reform act to bring Medicaid payments for primary care services up to at least Medicare levels for the next two years. The Academy issued a Speak Out alert on Dec. 4, asking its members to contact their legislators in Washington to voice opposition to the provision. In addition, the AAFP and 43 of its state chapters, along with most of nation's other major physician organizations, have signed a joint letter to House and Senate leaders expressing strong opposition to the proposal.

The AAFP Board of Directors has been meeting at the Academy's offices in Leawood, Kan., this week to discuss a wide range of issues important to family medicine, including payment and funding for graduate medical education. CME, MC-FP Deadlines Approaching
Academy Resources Can Help Members Manage Re-election Criteria

The Dec. 31 deadline to earn and report CME credits required for AAFP membership re-election is fast approaching. In addition, some family physicians are facing the deadline to complete the American Board of Family Medicine's (ABFM's) Maintenance of Certification for Family Physicians (MC-FP) program. Both active and supporting AAFP members must report a total of 150 credits -- including 75 Prescribed and 25 live credits -- every three years to remain in good standing. Members can meet Academy CME membership requirements by visiting the AAFP website to report credits earned, view transcripts and check re-election status.
