    CHICAGO – October 16, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today announced that nine Chicago neighborhoods are the first beneficiaries of the Illinois Gigabit Communities Challenge, a statewide competition to establish ultra-high speed broadband networks across Illinois. The state is awarding $2 million in Illinois Jobs Now! capital funding to Gigabit Squared, which in partnership with Cook County, the city of Chicago and the University of Chicago, will deploy gigabit fiber and wireless in neighborhoods on Chicago’s mid-south side.

    Illinois has some serious financial problems. We’ve seen decades of fiscal mismanagement. It’s critical for our state that Illinois finds sound fiscal footing once and for all. Our biggest problems are pensions and Medicaid. This coming fiscal year, they will eat up 39 percent of the state budget, and drive our state even deeper into debt. That’s not good for our bond rating. That’s not good for Illinois. That’s not good for our communities, our schools or our businesses.

    We need major reforms to fix Illinois’ broken pension systems. Delaying, deferring, or denying this challenge is not an option. This isn’t about politics – no matter where you stand, Illinois must address this problem. Today.

    The State of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) will hold a public hearing on Thursday, August 9, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to receive comments on the 2013 LIHEAP State Plan to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to implement the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for eligible households in Illinois.

    SPRINGFIELD – August 21, 2012. 2012 was a banner year for the Illinois State Fair.

    Attendance soared 13 percent this year. According to newly released figures from state fair officials, 918,875 people passed through the gates during the fair, which is 103,275 more than a year ago and the most since 2002. The fair concluded on Sunday.

    CHICAGO – August 15, 2012. Governor Pat Quinn today issued a statement following the announcement by U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack declaring the remaining two Illinois counties, DuPage and Will, as eligible for drought relief.

    “Illinois’ hard-working farmers are the backbone of our economy,” Governor Quinn said. “I am grateful Secretary Vilsack granted my request to declare the entire state an agriculture disaster area to help our farmers recover from this devastating drought.” I thank Senator Durbin and Secretary Vilsack for their commitment to helping our impacted farming communities.”
