The founder of a distinctive national school of painting in Denmark, Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853) influenced a generation of artists who collectively created the golden ageof Danish painting. Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the artist's death, this exhibition will be the first in twenty years devoted exclusively to Eckersberg's art, and the first such monographic exhibition ever held outside Denmark.
The presentation of some fifty works will trace Eckersberg's career from his neoclassical beginnings as a student of Nicolai Abildgaard, through his formative periods of study in Paris and Rome, to his mature career in Denmark, where, after his appointment to the Royal Academy in 1818, he became the most influential teacher in the history of Danish art. The exhibition represents all aspects of his multifaceted work but will have a special emphasis on his portraits, landscapes, and marine subjects. In Washington, the exhibition will form part of the Danish cultural festival taking place at that time.
