Peace Corps Volunteer Spotlight: Henry Chilufya

Since 2008, Henry has been a Peace Corps programming and training specialist in Zambia, providing training and technical support to Volunteers and their counterparts in sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, beekeeping, and appropriate technology. He attended D–Lab's International Design and Development Summit in Ghana and participated in three Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) D–lab trainings in Zambia. Henry is the lead staff member in setting up Peace Corps' appropriate technology centers. He has also worked as a forestry official in the Forestry Department of Zambia and has assisted Volunteers in pre–service and in–service trainings as a technical trainer since 2005.

Smithsonian FolkLife Festival: Henry and others from the Peace Corps/Zambia team will be demonstrating appropriate technology projects they are promoting in workshops and resource centers through the country. The focus of these projects is to use village resources to improve the standard of living by providing energy, fighting disease, and ensuring food security. They will offer hand–washing stations and demonstrate the use of solar–food dryers, treadle pumps, pedal–powered cellphone chargers and clothes washers, coolers, cookers, smokers, maize hullers, fuel–efficient stoves, and will show how to use corncobs to create charcoal.
