ACF is joining the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Safe Kids USA to launch the “Look Before You Lock” Campaign.
In 2011 alone, at least 33 children in the United States died after being left in unattended cars or vans, and an unknown number of others were injured. According to KidsandCars.org, in more than 54 percent of cases the person responsible accidentally left the child in the vehicle. Make a habit of looking in the vehicle - front and back – before you lock the door.

Heatstroke in vehicles is the leading cause of all non-crash-related fatalities involving children 14 and younger. These deaths are completely preventable, and everyone in the community – especially parents and Head Start and child care providers – have roles to play in protecting our children.
HHS in partnership with DOT/NHTSA have developed a voluntary Pledge Form that providers and parents may use to work together to keep children safe. For example, providers and parents can agree to immediately inform each other if a child is expected to arrive at home or at an early care and education center and does not.
The Office of Child Care works closely and collaboratively with agencies across the government to develop and promote programs for children.
