Programs

The Office of Family Assistance is responsible for the following programs to serve low-income families.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program is designed to help needy families achieve self-sufficiency. States receive block grants to design and operate programs that accomplish one of the purposes of the TANF program.
 

Tribal logo

Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Tribal TANF)

Federally recognized Indian tribes are eligible to apply for funding to administer and operate their own TANF programs. This eligibility is described under section 412 of the Social Security Act, as amended by Pub.L.104-193.

Native Employment Works (NEW)

The Native Employment Works (NEW) program provides funding for a variety of work-related activities to support job readiness, job placement and retention. Our initiatives allow grantees to serve designated populations through these work activities and supportive services.

Healthy Marriage & Responsible Fatherhood

The Claims Resolution Act of 2010 (CRA) authorized $150 million for eight healthy marriage promotion activities and three activities to promote responsible fatherhood.

 

Health Profession Opportunity GrantsHealth Profession Opportunity Grant (HPOG)

Authorized by the Affordable Care Act, the Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG) program provides education and training to TANF recipients and other low-income individuals for occupations in the health care field that pay well and are expected to either experience labor shortages or be in high demand.
