Masterpieces from the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, Rome

June 16- September 2, 1996

Overview: 10 paintings and 2 sculptures were on tour while the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj was being renovated. This was the first time these works of art, including Velázquez' portrait of Pope Innocent X and busts of the pope by Bernini and Algardi, had been seen in the United States. The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery, London. The coordinator for the National Gallery of Art in Washington was David Alan Brown, curator of Italian Renaissance painting.
