WASHINGTON, February 27, 2012 - London Meat
Company, a New York, N.Y., establishment, is recalling
approximately 200 pounds of country breakfast sausage
because it contains monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is not
declared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today.
The products subject to recall include:
- 5-lb boxes of "Milano's Country Breakfast Sausage,"
containing 80 sausage links per box.
Each box bears the establishment number "EST. 8777" inside
the USDA mark of inspection. These products were
made-to-order for restaurants and caterers in the New York
City area through Feb. 21, 2012.
The problem was discovered during a routine inspection by
FSIS personnel. FSIS has determined that the MSG was
introduced into the product when the company changed
seasoning blends but did not update its product label. FSIS
and the company have received no reports of adverse
reactions due to consumption of these products. It should be
noted that MSG can cause a brief reaction in people with
sensitivity to MSG. Anyone concerned about a reaction should
contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks
(including at restaurants) to verify recalling firms notify
their customers of the recall and to ensure that steps are
taken to make certain that the product is no longer
available to consumers.
Consumer and media with questions about the recall should
contact the company's co-owner Michael Milano at (212)
255-2135.
Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available
24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov
or via smartphone at
m.askkaren.gov. "Ask Karen" live chat services are
available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET.
The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline
(1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can
be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday
through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available
24 hours a day. |
