About the Challenge

Using the principles of heath literacy, teams must develop products that help NPs and PAs in the retail setting to appropriately communicate and deliver evidence-based care for otitis media OR screening for obesity in children and adolescents. Each team must involve at least one practicing Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant. The resources developed can be in any form or format, including print and electronic media.

As the basis for their projects, challenge entrants must use research findings from the AHRQ Health Literacy report, plus the Otitis Media report or the Screening for Obesity in Children and Adolescents  report (i.e., Health Literacy + Otitis media OR Health Literacy + Screening for Obesity).

Submissions will be scored by an expert panel. Criteria include effectiveness (40%), usefulness at point of care (30%), scalability (15%), creativity (10%), and team composition (5%). Higher scores will be awarded to teams who think creatively about ways to communicate and display information, and consider how the resources they develop could support the use of best practices at the point of care.

In launching this challenge, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) hopes to:

  • Encourage development of relevant and useful resources that can be easily adopted for use by NPs and PAs in the convenience care setting
  • Increase awareness of the EHC program and its products among the retail NP and PA communities
  • Learn about effective ways to communicate with the retail NP and PA communities
  • Introduce and expand usage of evidence from the Effective Health Care (EHC) program to an important clinician audience

AHRQ supports involvement of diverse stakeholder groups in its comparative effectiveness research and launched this pilot project to engage target clinician groups more actively in the EHC Program.  AHRQ developed the challenge in collaboration with the American Institutes for Research and AcademyHealth.
