Bannister Federal Complex

GSA Regional Office Entrance to the Bannister Federal ComplexThe Bannister Federal Complex is located at 1500 and 2000 E. Bannister Road in south Kansas City, Missouri.

Ownership of the complex is divided between GSA and the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

Since 1949, the NNSA's Kansas City Plant has built nonnuclear components for nuclear weapons. As a result, the complex has evolved into a high-tech research production facility that specializes in science-based manufacturing. Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies, the prime contractor operating the plant, currently employs more than 2,300 people.

Office and warehouse space not controlled by NNSA is owned and operated by GSA. Current agencies in GSA space include GSA's Regional Office, Marine Corps, Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Veterans Affairs, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Protective Service. About 1,900 federal workers operate in the non-manufacturing space.

In 2006, GSA and the NNSA announced plans to relocate the Kansas City Plant to a new 1.5 million square-foot campus-style facility at the former Richards Gebauer Air Force Base.

For facility-related questions, please contact the Kansas City South Field Office located in Building 50 of the Bannister Federal Complex.

Legacy Environmental Issues

Agencies operating at the complex are committed to meeting the government’s responsibilities for environmental stewardship. NNSA, GSA, the EPA and the State of Missouri Department of Natural Resources maintain extensive environmental sampling and remediation programs to address legacy contamination.

As part of its commitment to workers in the GSA-controlled space, GSA has requested the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conduct a Health Hazard Evaluation. Past GSA inspections and assessments indicate no health risks to building occupants, including employees, visitors and children at the child care facility.
