These maps include natural features, such as mountains, valleys, plains, lakes, rivers, and vegetation. Contours are used to show elevation. Also included are constructed features: roads, railroads, boundaries, transmission lines, and buildings. The standard map size is 7.5 minutes of latitude by 7.5 minutes of longitude. Large-scale topographic maps are used for engineering, energy exploration, natural resource conservation, environmental management, public works design, commercial and residential planning, and outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, and fishing. The Index to Topographic Maps - 1:24,000 and Other Large Scales map layer shows the positions of the more than 54,000 large-scale topographic maps that cover the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition to the latest US Topo maps, all USGS historical topographic maps have been scanned and are available online at no cost. |
