NHLBI Global Health Programs and Activities

Through the Office of Global Health (OGH), the NHLBI supports research and training programs to promote the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases. These activities include:

• The UnitedHealth and NHLBI Collaborating Centers of Excellence, a global network of 10 centers which each include a research institution in a developing country paired with at least one partner academic institution in a developed country. These centers are developing infrastructures for research and training to enhance their capacity to conduct population-based or clinical research to monitor, prevent, or control chronic diseases, with a focus on cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.
• The Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) , which supports foreign institutions in Sub-Saharan African Countries that receive U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) support and their partners to develop or expand and enhance models of medical education. The OGH oversees two awards funded by the NHLBI at the University of Zimbabwe and Makerere University in Uganda.
• The NHLBI is a founding member of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases, which coordinates and supports multicountry, multidisciplinary research activities that address the prevention and treatment of chronic noncommunicable diseases, with a focus on the needs of low- and middle- income countries.
• The NHLBI sponsored the Committee on Preventing the Global Epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease: Meeting the Challenges in Developing Countries, convened by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

The NHLBI also has a long history of international research and outreach programs.
