Interior Data Sets

The Department of the Interior is committed to the President's Open Government Initiative and has submitted seven high value datasets in support of the Open Government Directive. These data sets span a wide range of functions of Interior and represent areas of continuing interest by our stakeholders.

Interior has been a leading partner in Data.gov. Our CIO, Sanjeev (Sonny) Bhagowalia is the Federal CIO Council Co-Chair for Interior and has been tireless in his support for identifying and publishing high value data for Interior and the government at large while maintaining appropriate controls so as to limit the potential of exposing sensitive or privacy related information. Although there are seven high value datasets specifically targeted for meeting the needs of the Open Government Directive we continue to identify more opportunities for dataset publication and have many more in the review queue.

Interior's High Value Data Sets

  • Natural Resource Volunteer Opportunities
The volunteer opportunities dataset provides information about more than a thousand natural resource volunteer opportunities and government points of contact. (These and hundreds of other jobs can be searched at www.volunteer.gov/gov.) Interior is the managing partner and many of its bureaus including the BLM, NPS and FWS participate as well as partner agencies such as the USDA Forest Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

  • Federal National Recreation Sites
This data set includes all federal natural recreation sites across the country and the recreation opportunities supported by the site. This dataset allows the public to find recreation opportunities for the entire government and eliminates the need to visit each managing agency for information.

  • Wild Horse and Burro
This data set includes herd information for Wild Horses and Burros on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The welfare of these animals is of great interest to the public and this dataset provides increased transparency into the herd locations and numbers. Interior actively pursued this dataset due to public interest and in response to a request for publication of data to data.gov regarding wild horses and burros.
