The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute supports large-scale genomic research programs and consortia that seek to discover the genetic determinants of cardiovascular, lung and blood diseases and translate genomic findings into prediction, prevention and treatment of disease. Several recent NHLBI programs have supported large-scale, collaborative genomic research studies, including: genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and projects to develop tools for analysis of genomics data; genotyping and DNA sequencing for genetic studies; pharmacogenetic research studies; proteomic and other 'omic’ research programs; large-scale sequencing studies that utilize next-generation technologies in targeted and genome-wide sequencing; and use of induced pluripotent stem cells to model diseases for next-generation genetic association studies.

Genomics: Gene Discovery and Clinical Applications for Cardiovascular, Lung, and Blood Diseases will focus on cutting edge findings in recent and ongoing genome-wide research studies, highlighting novel discoveries, including results from large-scale collaborative studies, new analysis techniques, novel directions in functional genomics, and translational research. A broad cross-section of experts in the field, including researchers involved in molecular biology and molecular genomics, bioinformatics, and genetic epidemiology, as well as physicians specializing in heart, lung and blood diseases, will discuss the emerging science and the translation of these advances to the clinic.

Among the featured NHLBI Genome Programs will be the Candidate Gene Association Resource (CARe), SNP Health Association Resource (SHARe), Enhancing Development of Genome-Wide Association Methods (ENDGAME), PharmacoGenetics Research Network (PGRN), SNP Typing for Association with Multiple Phenotypes from Existing Epidemiologic Data (STAMPEED), Proteomics Program, Exome Sequencing Program (ESP), Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) Sequencing Program, and the Next-Generation Genetic Association Studies Program

The goals of this symposium are:

  • To provide cutting edge information about recent scientific advances from NHLBI genome research programs
  • To inform attendees about NHLBI and NIH genomics programs and consortia and available resources
  • To catalyze collaborations and stimulate ideas for translational research
  • To hold an open discussion about new opportunities for human genomics research
