Healthy People 2020

The Office of Population Affairs (OPA) is the lead agency for developing the family planning topic area, which is one of 42 topic areas in Healthy People 2020. Healthy People provides science-based, 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. The family planning topic area includes 15 objectives. OPA developed a publication [pdf, 458 kb], which highlights the 62 Healthy People 2020 objectives that most directly address reproductive health.

The Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators reflect twelve high-priority health issues and communicate actions that can be taken to address them. They will be used to assess the health of the Nation over the decade, facilitate collaboration across sectors, and motivate action at the national, State, and community levels to improve the health of the U.S. population.

One of the Healthy People 2020 Leading Health Indicators is Reproductive and Sexual Health. The Reproductive and Sexual Health Leading Health Indicator is being measured using two specific objectives from Healthy People 2020:

  • Sexually active females aged 15 to 44 years who received reproductive health services in the past 12 months (FP-7.1)
  • Persons living with HIV who know their serostatus (HIV-13)
