NCCS hosts evening with experts to discuss quality cancer care; honors two

October 2, 2012

On Thursday, Sept. 27, NCCS hosted its annual Rays of HopeĀ® event, inviting a panel of experts to discuss quality cancer care in the U.S., hosted by Susan Dentzer, Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs. NCCS also honored Amanda Bennett, Executive Editor, Bloomberg News, and author of The Cost of Hope, and Amy J. Berman, Senior Program Officer, The John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc., for their work to raise awareness of cancer survivorship.

Nina Wendling appointed executive director for NCCS

NCCS has appointed Nina Wendling as executive director. Wendling has been with the organization for more than six years, previously serving as senior director of operations and development.

NCCS and colleagues urge medicare payment reforms to encourage cancer care planning and coordination

NCCS was joined by the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Alliance in a letter urging the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to establish a system for making Medicare payments for cancer care planning and coordination services.

NCI director Varmus addresses obstacles to cancer research during national press club remarks

National Cancer Institute (NCI) Director Harold Varmus, M.D. described the current state of cancer research and identified obstacles to cancer research progress during remarks at the National Press Club on Tuesday, September 25.

Comprehensive study by NCI's Cancer Genome Atlas project identifies four genome groups for breast cancer

A new study published in the journal Nature finds there are four main types of breast cancer tumors. The study, which is part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Genome Atlas project, yielded important information about the genetic and epigenetic abnormalities that cause breast cancer as well as significant data to support breast cancer therapy development.
