October: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic Violence Bridging the Gap
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. HHS Steering Committee on Violence Against Women and the Coordinating Committee on Women's Health invite you to an event in the Great Hall of the Humphrey Building on October 9th from 1-3PM Eastern or via webcast.

The theme for this event is Bridging the Gap: Screening and Counseling for Intimate Partner Violence in Health Care Settings. The event will focus on encouraging a comprehensive health care response to victims of domestic violence. Dr. Howard Koh, Assistant Secretary for Health, will open the session. Other scheduled speakers include: Bryan Samuels, Commissioner, Administration on Children, Youth & Families, Lynn Rosenthal, White House Advisor on Violence Against Women, and leaders from the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the National Health Resource Center on Domestic Violence, and state/local organizations addressing domestic violence in the health setting.

Exhibitors from local and national organizations that address and prevent violence against women will be present before and after the event to share resources.

The planning of this event has been an effort of a planning committee led by the Family Violence Prevention and Services Program within the Administration on Children, Youth and Families. Some of the agency partners include the Office on Women's Health, Health Resources and Services Administration, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Legislation, Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, Office of Adolescent Health, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Indian Health Services, Office of Population Affairs and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
