Use of Force Training Program
Up one levelThe Use of Force Training Program will provide the law enforcement officer with an understanding of the legal and practical parameters for using force.
It discusses basic concepts in use of force such as:
- the constitutional standard in the use of force;
- factors that may cause unnecessary hesitation when an officer uses force;
- methods of overcoming unnecessary hesitation in use of force applications;
- fundamentals of documenting a use of force incident;
- articulation of human performance factors that impact use of force responses;
- critical elements of post-incident procedures;
- legal standards outlined in Graham v. Connor for the use of force during the seizure of an individual;
- when deadly force is objectively reasonable;
- legal issues associated with the use of intermediate weapons such as striking instruments and chemical sprays;
- elements of “qualified immunity” and when a law enforcement officer sued for excessive use of force is entitled to it.

Tuition and Cost

Attendees are responsible for all travel, lodging and meal expenses.
Prerequisites for Attendance
Qualified applicants must be full-time, sworn law enforcement peace officers.
Preference for admission into this program is given to non-federal law enforcement officers or other emergency responders working in rural areas. “Rural” is defined as any area outside of a metropolitan statistical area (MSA), as defined by the Office of Management and Budget; or any jurisdiction inside of a MSA located in a county, borough, parish or land under the jurisdiction of an Indian Tribe with a population of no more than 50,000. Non-rural applicants will be admitted on a space-available basis approximately 35 days prior to the program’s start date.
Registration Information
(1) Go to https://registration.fletc.gov to create an account or login to an existing account;
(2) Once logged in select “view/register for courses” under Basic User Functions at the left of the page;
(3) select desired course and location and click on “search”; and
(4) course options will populate below the box and then select “apply” to register for desired course.
