Agencies Unite for Statewide Campaign Encouraging Recreationists to Keep Motorized Vehicles on Trails

Tread Lightly! logoRIDE ON Designated Routes is a new statewide campaign that has united land management agencies to educate outdoor recreationists who use motorized vehicles on Utah’s public lands.

The campaign, created by Tread Lightly!, unites the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Utah Division of State Parks and Recreation, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and the Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration together in an effort to spread a consistent message throughout the state. Tread Lightly! also brings funding and support from the private sector, such as Yamaha’s OHV Access Initiative and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, making this a public/private partnership promoting conservation and sustainable outdoor recreation.

"The collaboration among agencies regarding the implementation of this campaign will be unprecedented," said Juan Palma, BLM Utah State Director. "Whether you’re recreating at a State Park or on BLM land, in the north or south, there will be continuity across boundaries and consistency in messaging throughout the state."

Fuels Treatment Projects Aid in Containment of Wolf Den Fire

BLM fire engine fighting Wolf Den FireThe Wolf Den Fire, sparked by lightning on June 29, 2012, started near the historic town site of Dragon on BLM Vernal Field Office lands.  Resources were dispatched; however, they were unable to contain the fire due to erratic fire behavior.  The area had experienced drought conditions since early spring and there were high amounts of carry-over fuels from the previous year.

Firefighters tried to burn out along roads and use aviation resources to stop the fire.  It continued to burn through retardant drops and jumped the roads being used as containment lines.  At the end of day one, the fire was approximately 2,300 acres and was threatening an above-ground natural gas line.  Also being threatened were numerous oil and gas lines worth millions of dollars.

The BLM manages nearly 22.9 million acres of public lands in Utah, representing about 42 percent of the state. Located mostly in western and southeastern Utah, these lands are varied, ranging from rolling uplands to sprawling desert lowlands. Utah’s public lands feature some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, from the snow-capped peaks of remote mountain ranges to colorful red-rock canyons.

The BLM’s first national monument is also located on public lands in Utah. Situated in beautiful red-rock country, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument encompasses nearly 1.9 million acres in the south-central part of the state. The area offers a unique combination of archaeological, historical, paleontological, geological, and biological resources.

BLM Utah manages public lands for a variety of uses. These lands not only provide minerals, energy, and livestock forage, but also natural, historical and cultural resources that the agency is charged with protecting. In addition, Utah’s public lands offer incomparable opportunities to experience solitude and enjoy outdoor recreation.
