FAQ: Finding NLM® Serials Data and MEDLINE® Indexed Journals
Question: How can I find the list of journals currently indexed in MEDLINE?
Where can NLM Serials data be found?
Answer:
List of Journals Indexed in MEDLINE can be found:
- In the NLM Catalog
The NLM Catalog has a journal subset which includes journals cited in all Entrez databases. The majority of journals in this subset have been or are being indexed for MEDLINE, the largest component of the PubMed database.
To retrieve a list of all currently indexed MEDLINE journals go to the NLM Catalog, click on Limits, then under Journal Subsets, select "Currently Indexed in MEDLINE."
Users interested in seeing a list of all journals indexed over time for MEDLINE go to NLM Catalog, click on Limits, then under Journal Subsets, select, "Currently or Previously Indexed in MEDLINE."
Please note that titles newly selected for MEDLINE indexing are announced on the Journals Recently Accepted by NLM for Inclusion in MEDLINE page.
NLM Serials data can be found:
- In the following free NLM databases (see also Additional Details below for descriptions of these databases):
- In the following additional machine-readable formats:
- In the List of Serials Indexed for Online Users (LSIOU), an annual free publication that is available online from the NLM Web site in XML format.
Please note that titles newly selected for MEDLINE indexing are announced on this Web page: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/lstrc/new_titles.html - Under the NLM License Program at no charge: Serfile, which is the subset of all serials in LocatorPlus or NLM Catalog, is available in either MARC or XML format. Serfile has the most data elements available. Start here, http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/licensee/, and select the link for Catfile, CatfilePlus, and Serfile Licenses.
- Via pre-formatted ftp files derived from the NLM Catalog in delimited format; see List of All Journals Cited in PubMed®.

Additional Details:
- LocatorPlus
LocatorPlus is the NLM free online public access catalog and a component of the NLM integrated library system. It contains bibliographic data for over 1.2 million journals, books, audiovisuals, computer software, electronic resources, and other materials.
Use LocatorPlus:- To find records for journals, books, reports and audiovisuals in the NLM collection
- To find records for serials and books not in the NLM collection, but owned by regional libraries
- To see records for journals, books, reports and audiovisuals on order, on loan, or in process at the NLM
- To find records for journals, books, reports and audiovisuals in the NLM collection
- NLM Catalog
The NLM Catalog provides an alternate search interface to NLM bibliographic data originally appearing in LocatorPlus. The NLM Catalog resides as one of the database's in the Entrez retrieval system. The subset of journals cited in NCBI databases in NLM Catalog has a total of about 19,000 journals. Of these over 14,000 journals are considered to be MEDLINE journals (of which over 5,400 are currently indexed). About 6,000 are journals that are either cited in the other Entrez databases, or were indexed selectively for only certain subject areas such as population demographics or history of medicine by collaborating partners for MEDLINE. Users interested in detailed indexing information for MEDLINE journals may select the Journal display format when viewing MEDLINE journal records to view this information.
The Entrez retrieval system was developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine® (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Entrez is the text-based search and retrieval system used at NCBI for services including PubMed, NLM Catalog, OMIM, Nucleotide and Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes, Taxonomy, and others.
