On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Papua New Guinea as you celebrate the 37th anniversary of your independence this September 16.

The United States and Papua New Guinea have enjoyed a close friendship, working together on many issues from improving transparency and good governance, to combating trafficking in persons, curbing the effects of climate change, protecting fisheries, and promoting gender equality. I especially want to congratulate the people of Papua New Guinea on the successful completion of your recent elections, including the election of three women to Parliament.

The United States is committed to the future prosperity of Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Region, and we join you in the spirit of our continuing friendship and cooperation. I send all the people of Papua New Guinea my best wishes for a year of peace, progress, and prosperity.
