Research Career Development Programs in Emergency Medicine (RFA HL-11-011)

In July 2011 the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) funded six institutional research career development (K12) awards to promote multidisciplinary clinical research training programs in emergency medicine (EM) that prepares clinician-scientists for independent research careers and academic leadership roles in EM.  Programs will provide comprehensive research training to evaluate innovative approaches in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients with acute, life-threatening manifestations of cardiovascular, pulmonary and hematologic diseases, and severe trauma in emergency department (ED) settings.  

This goal of this program is to promote the growth of strong, competitive clinical EM investigators. Clinical research training will help ensure a solid foundation for EM research and thereby advance the public health.

The above funded K12 programs will offer:

• Two to three years of didactic training in clinical research and mentored research experience with specific emphasis of emergency medicine research
• Financial support for salary and fringe benefits for 75% effort
• Funds for research expenses, supplies, equipment, technical personnel, travel, tuition and fees.

Candidate requirements include:

• Be physicians or doctorally prepared clinicians such as PharmD or a PhD/ScD nurse, with a demonstrated interest in emergency medicine research related to issues of interest to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health.
• Must be citizens or non-citizen nationals of the United States, or be lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence (in possession of a current valid Alien Registration Receipt Card I-155 or other legal verification of such)
• Must not be or have been a Principal Investigator on an R01 or R21 award or on a component of a Program Project (P01), Center grant (P50, P60, or U54), mentored career development (K-series) grant, or other equivalent research grant award. However, those that may have had support on a NRSA grant (F or T) and/or NIH small grant (R03) would be eligible.

The long-term programmatic goal for the K12 program is for candidates to develop the skills necessary to become independent researchers in clinical emergency medicine and to successfully compete for NIH grant support. If further mentored research support is needed before applying for an R01 or equivalent grant, K12 graduates are eligible to apply for an NIH “K” award for up to 4 more years.
